Gettin’ Spooky with Lorelei K

Since starting the Soundbox Sessions project, the goal was to create cool, unique looking live streamed performances that have the look and appeal of a real music video. Every single session has a unique direction, lighting setup, and aesthetic. That’s what makes Soundbox Sessions so special.

Camera view of the final shot that we took live for Lorelei K.

When the amazing and talented Lorelei K was booked for the week of Halloween, we needed to do something to match her individual style and aesthetic. Being a solo-performer, the idea was to create a lighting aesthetic that would isolate her and emphasize her act. First task was to set the foundation of the lighting with the key light. We went with a top lighting approach, done with a simple Aperture 120d and a softbox attachment. Rather than lighting the entire scene and staging area, the light falls only on Lorelei K. Everything else behind and around her then falls to black. CHECK!

This was our lighting design prior to the gig. Each camera is listed, along with the placement of the lights/mirrors.

Now that we had a great foundation of lighting, it was time to get a little creative with the supplemental lighting. Lorelei K’s album “Lightbender” served as the inspiration here. While, we don’t have the real ability to bend light (damn physics), but our first thought was mirrors and how that could effectively bounce light around. Cheap door hanging mirrors can be found at Target for like $15 each. Not only will this give the scene a bit more depth, but allowed for an illusion of more lights in the scene without the need of more sources. Since these mirrors come with hooks to mount over the doors, we simply mounted these onto a couple of C-stand arms and gaffed them down to be sure.

To throw in a few more effects, each camera had a mist filter over their lenses and we utilized a smoke machine to give it even more atmosphere.

Overall, we were extremely happy with how this setup turned out. Not only was it experimental and unique, it matched the artist and her style. She was incredibly happy with how it all looked and gave a great performance (along with some great special effects makeup and all).

Take a peek at the full live stream performance below (performance begins at 5 min).
